Review
“Jonathan Knight has done it again. He’s scored a touchdown with his masterful—and detailed—synopsis of the Browns-Bengals rivalry, delving all the way back to before the two teams even played their first game against one another in 1970, back to Paul Brown’s beginnings as a coach that paved the way for him to eventually create both franchises. From the heated 1970s to the apex of the rivalry in the late 1980s to some very bleak periods since Brown’s death in 1991, Knight brings to life the highs and lows, the ebbs and flows, of Ohio’s professional football rivalry.” –Roger Gordon, author of Cleveland Browns A-Z and Cincinnati Bengals Facts & Trivia “Jonathan Knight draws a demarcation line between victory and defeat, success and shame, in his story of the tangled rivalry of the Browns and Bengals. The great divide was the death a generation ago of Paul Brown, the founding father of both franchises and of modern pro football. A shared ghost haunting both teams is as good an explanation as any for why fans of both teams have so often screamed 'Boo.'” –Bill Livingston, former Plain Dealer sports columnist “Paul Brown was one of the faces on the Mount Rushmore of NFL coaches. Because of the great respect everyone had for him, and the history he had with both teams, whenever the Browns played the Bengals, there was always a different feeling leading up to the game. Jonathan Knight successfully captures that feeling in his book, which explores how Paul Brown's legacy created and still shapes the Browns-Bengals rivalry.” –Doug Dieken, Browns broadcaster and longtime offensive lineman “NFL fans outside Ohio enjoy poking fun at the Browns’ and Bengals’ struggles. But Paul Brown isn't laughing from the great beyond. As ‘The Father of Professional Football,’ PB is sending a subliminal message to his ‘sons’ from the grave—Get to work!” –Chick Ludwig, Bengals beat writer, Dayton Daily News (1997-2008)

I'll begin this review by saying that this was a good book and it had an interesting premise. But it takes much, much more than the ghost of two franchise's creator to hold their fortunes under water for 28 football seasons. The Cleveland Browns in particular have been average or just plain stunk since Paul Brown's death (he died on August 5, 1991), mainly because they haven't found any franchise quarterbacks since Bernie Kosar was in his glory days from the late 1980s to the early 1990s.The Browns since 1991, haven't drafted particularly well at the top of their drafts. First and second round busts after busts since 1991, can cripple a franchise not only monetarily, but more importantly production wise.As for the Bengals, they've had their share of quarterback, running back, defensive line, and running back busts since 1991 too. Then there's the fact that that the Cincinnati front office held on to Marvin Lewis toooooooo darn long. The guy came in with a reputation as a big-time defensive X's and O's coach, who was supposed to have top-notch defenses coupled with offenses that could get the Bengals past mediocrity. But all the Bengals did in Lewis's 16 years in the Queen City, was wallow in mediocrity, early playoff exits, and underachievement. At the end of the day, this book will educate Browns and Bengals fans and non Browns and Bengals fans. And this book will also infuriate Browns and Bengals fans all over again, because of the mistakes that both of those franchises have made in the front office and on the field. This book documented the ups and downs of Browns and Bengals football since both of their inceptions, and that's what I cared about when I was reading the book. I don't care about that Paul Brown ghost stuff, but you gotta have some carrot these days to sell books because nobody reads anymore.
This book was interesting because I have been a Browns fan since the All-American Conference dissolved. Had always heard a great deal about Paul Brown. It was also somewhat of a dull read. I could have cared less about Cincinnati, but the Brown connection kept me going. This certainly will never make the best-sell list. I'm glad I read it, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
The premise of this book is obviously faulty. The current (as of 2018) Cleveland Browns started as an expansion team in 1999. Paul Brown died in 1991. If there is any comparison to be made, it should be between the Baltimore Ravens (formerly the Cleveland Browns until Art Modell moved them to Baltimore in 1996) and the Bengals.Sheeesh!
Long time Brown's fan. Enjoyable read and a great history of the 2 teams - from the origins through current ownership. Brought back memories of the many games and some of the characters that played the games. Given the Brown's history since re-entering the league in 1999, one wonders if there isn't some truth in the title. Recommended for current Browns and Bengals fans that aren't totally familiar with the history of the rivalry.
Very well researched, an easy read, and hard to put down. As a Bengals and/or Browns fan, you will be nodding right along with the author as you remember the good, the bad and the ugly. Connecting it all with Paul Brown, the founder of both franchises, was a very creative touch. Knight doesn't miss anything as he weaves the two star-crossed franchises into one compelling read. Two thumbs-up.
Bengals and Browns fans finally have something upon which they can agree! If misery loves company, these football siblings have wallowed in sorrow for the better part of three decades since the passing of their patriarch, Paul Brown. Is there really a tie between the passing of football’s most inventive man? Maybe not. But the fans’ pain on two corners of the state is undeniable. Take a trip through time as Knight highlights (lowlights?) the journey for Ohio’s two professional football franchises.
It brought back a bunch of memories, some I didn’t care to relive. I was at Riverfront to watch the Bengals last playoff win. It’s been a tough few decades since.
