The book has rich information, covering logistics, accommodation, food, shopping...However it didn't help me much when I was in Brazil.The major problem is that it has almost no photos or pictures for the places it recommends and the recommendations are all listed in Portuguese.It's hard for me to match the places I have been to the recommendation list in this book. And when I was looking for some attractions, I didn't how the architecture looks like.
The maps were not easy to use. We struggled once in Brazil to navigate using the book and ended up downloading the Lonely Planet guide and using it from our phones instead!

The Fodor's Travel Guide on Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil could have been presented better for the reader. Two of Brazil's biggest cities have wonderful features but they don't come across on the pages. The first few colored pages are worthwhile. The book's layout is a bit confusing especially the maps. I felt the maps could be clear, precise and in color for the reader.The book is still worth buying if you're traveling there. The book's contents include chapters such as "Experience Rio De Janeiro & Sao Paulo;" "Rio De Janeiro;" "Side Trips from Rio;" "Sao Paulo;" "Side Trips from Sao Paulo;" "Vocabulary;" "Travel Smart;" "Index" and "About Our Writers."The first chapter or unit entitled "Experience Rio De Janeiro & Sao Paulo" included a section on "Brazil Today;" "What's Where;" "Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo Planner;" "Free and Almost Free;" "Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo Like a Local;" "Beachgoing in Brazil;" "Flavors of Brazil;" "Carnival in Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo;" "If You Like;" Great Itineraries;" and "Sounds of Brazil."Chapter Two is entitled "Rio De Janeiro" with sections on "Orientation and Planning;" "Exploring;" "Beaches;" "Where to Eat;" "Where to Stay;" "Nightlife and Performing Arts;" "Sports and the Outdoors" and Shopping."Chapter Three is entitled "Side Trips from Rio…." with sections like "Orientation and Planning;" The Sun Coast;" "North of Rio" and "The Green Coast."Chapter Four is entitled "Sao Paulo" with sections like "Orientation and Planning;" "Exploring Sao Paulo;" "Where to Eat;" "Where to Stay;" "Nightlife and Performing Arts;" "Sports and the Outdoors" and "Shopping."Chapter Five is entitled "Side Trips from Sao Paulo" with sections on "Orientation and Planning;" "Along the Coast" and "Inland."
This book does not have as many pictures as most Fodor's travel guide books that I have seen in the past. It is full of information about places to visit and things to do, and offers planning tips.It's a book that will give you a solid heads up about hidden costs, possible inconveniences that you might face on your visit. This is true about both general travel, and travel to the many different places and experiences read the book describes.If you are on a budget, the book can help with planning inexpensive activities and generally managing your budget.There's a really nice basic language got in the back of the book that I enjoyed because I had not realized it Portuguese was so similar to Spanish, and I think that it would benefit Spanish speaking people a lot. However even if you can't speak Spanish you might enjoy learning to count well in Portuguese.However if you really want to see any of the places that the book discusses, for the most part you'll need to use a way to browse the web and look places up.The book would have been so much better I think if it could have only had more pictures. However the trade-off is that it will be very easy to carry around. Iõt is light and not too thick. There are plenty of maps in the book, so it will be a good book to carry on your journey.
While Fodor's Travel isn't picture heavy, it is a clean, classic style of travel guides. Fodor's Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo (Travel Guide) by Fodor's Travel Guides follows the clean, classic style. It dives right in with some color pages and main points of the cities. The rest of the guide is text heavy and each chapter covers a topic (Itinerary, night life, planning, specific areas like the Sun Coast, etc). It is split into two sections with each section dedicated to a city (Rio and Sao Paulo) so if you are only planning on one city, that's the section that you can focus your reading on.It has been awhile since I've read a Fodor's Travel and I admit that I'm hooked on photos (the more the better!, I say) but this is actually quite nice. The format makes the reading (and planning) easy to follow. It covers a wide array of topics and explains it all in a clear way and when it does come to a map, it isn't lost in other graphics. So the format makes it easy to focus and make notes and such.This is a nice guide for these two interesting cities. It gives a lot of information to the reader to help plan a fun and safe trip.
I'm a devoted user of the Fodor guides for trip planning and education about laces we're going for the first time. However, this one on Rio is lacking some key things. First, very few photos and the maps are really small print. Carrying this with you while on the go would be problematic because Rio is crowded and fast moving and dangerous for tourists who look helpless or lost - not a great idea to be lurking on the street trying to read these maps. My second issue is simply the lack of realistic, detailed info about the crime issues and risks. They do mention pick pockets and the driving risk, but only as it refers to other drivers running red lights as they flee carjackers. The crime problem against tourists is a very serious and high risk issue and the truth is it needs to be fully addressed. In comparison to a For or guide for Cambodia from several years ago, this one just falls short.
