About the Author
Eric Carle is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for very young children. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has eaten its way into the hearts of literally millions of children all over the world and has been translated into more than 25 languages and sold over twelve million copies. Since the Caterpillar was published in 1969, Eric Carle has illustrated more than sixty books, many best sellers, most of which he also wrote. Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929, Eric Carle moved with his parents to Germany when he was six years old; he was educated there, and graduated from the prestigious art school, the Akademie der bildenden Kunste, in Stuttgart. But his dream was always to return to America, the land of his happiest childhood memories. So, in 1952, with a fine portfolio in hand and forty dollars in his pocket, he arrived in New York. Soon he found a job as a graphic designer in the promotion department of The New York Times. Later, he was the art director of an advertising agency for many years. One day, respected educator and author, Bill Martin Jr, called to ask Carle to illustrate a story he had written. Martin's eye had been caught by a striking picture of a red lobster that Carle had created for an advertisement. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? was the result of their collaboration. It is still a favorite with children everywhere. This was the beginning of Eric Carle's true career. Soon Carle was writing his own stories, too. His first wholly original book was 1,2,3 to the Zoo, followed soon afterward by the celebrated classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Eric Carle's art is distinctive and instantly recognizable. His art work is created in collage technique, using hand-painted papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and cheerful images. Many of his books have an added dimension - die-cut pages, twinkling lights as in The Very Lonely Firefly, even the lifelike sound of a cricket's song as in The Very Quiet Cricket - giving them a playful quality: a toy that can be read, a book that can be touched. Children also enjoy working in collage and many send him pictures they have made themselves, inspired by his illustrations. He receives hundreds of letters each week from his young admirers. The secret of Eric Carle's books' appeal lies in his intuitive understanding of and respect for children, who sense in him instinctively someone who shares their most cherished thoughts and emotions. The themes of his stories are usually drawn from his extensive knowledge and love of nature - an interest shared by most small children. Besides being beautiful and entertaining, his books always offer the child the opportunity to learn something about the world around them. It is his concern for children, for their feelings and their inquisitiveness, for their creativity and their intellectual growth that, in addition to his beautiful artwork, makes the reading of his books such a stimulating and lasting experience. Carle says: "With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? There are new people, a teacher, classmates - will they be friendly? I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown. The unknown often brings fear with it. In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun." © 2000 by Penguin Group (USA) Books for Young Readers. All rights reserved.

My daughter (2 year old) loves these books. I like them as well, which is kind of important too, since she wants me to read them to her every night. I've also given the "A very busy spider" to 2 other kiddos (same age as my daughter) and they really enjoy them as well.
I ordered this book as a gift for a friend who is expecting a baby. My son loved the hungry hungry catepillar as a baby, so I was excited to get this box set for my friend. Unfortunately, the Lonely Firefly book (which lights up and runs on batteries) came with dead batteries that were also a little corroded. Because of time-constraints, I had my husband clean out the battery compartment and we had to run out and purchase new batteries ($12). So, great book, not great quality.
My son loves these stories. We borrowed The Very Hungry Caterpillar from the library and my 22 month old fell in love. After we returned the book I decided to find him his own Very Hungry Caterpillar book that would be more durable than a paperback. Then I found this set. It's a great deal and all the stories are great! My son loves all of them. The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Busy Spider are very durable books. Perfect for any toddler to look at on their own. The Very Lonely Firefly was the exception. I purchased this set on July 5. I read it to my toddler and he looked through it almost daily. The back page of the book has fireflies that light up. The back page is very thick and contains the lights and batteries. After about a week the back section started to get loose. After 2 weeks the pages started to tear from the cardboard. I glued the paper down in an attempt to keep the back section from coming off. Today, July 30th, the back section ripped away from the book. The only thing holding it in place is the outer binding. I taped the back page but I doubt this will help for long.We love the stories and 2 of the 3 books are great and very sturdy for toddlers. I do recommend this set but I don't recommend letting your toddler look at The Very Lonely Firefly alone as I feel like this book has a design flaw that makes it less than durable for any toddler.UPDATE: Amazon sent a replacement. This time the firefly book stopped working completely after a few days. Haven't replaced batteries yet.
I got this for my son and he LOVES these books. He's 3-1/2, and every night for the past few months before bed we'd tell him to pick out 3 books, and it varied every night as to what he would pick... until we got these. Now he just grabs the whole "little library" as his choice :) The books are smaller than I thought, but a good size (and durable!) for him. He's started making the animal noises along with us for the spider book :)
I have several small board books of 'favourite words' taken from Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar and Very Busy Spider. I was very impressed with those little board books, I love the bright and fun colors, and my son loves it too. Thus I decided to buy this box set of the original stories. The Caterpillar and Spider is great. But I must say that I'm a little disappointed with The Very Lonely Firefly. The colors quite dard and not very interesting. It's like completely different concept from the other two books. But there is a 'surprise' at the very end of the book and I guess that compensate it. Nevertheless my son loves it, and I guess that's all that matters.
I'm a second grade teacher. This is my favorite children's author, and it's rare to find this set in a bookstore. While these are board books with great artwork by the author, perfect for very young children, the kids will keep loving them well into their school years. And as they grow, there is more in the books for them: They include skills to learn like counting, reading a clock face, knowing colors, understanding metamorphosis (a standard for 1st or 2nd grade, depending on your state), and they are just FULL of morals. If you like these, you should also search out The Very Grouchy Ladybug, The Mixed Up Chameleon (camouflage is also a main theme for many second grade curricula), and A House for Hermit Crab, among others by Eric Carle. I highly recommend this author!
Bought this as a baby shower gift. Glad these stories come in the board books for little ones.
Wonderful stories and illustrations. The board books hold up fairly well to our 18 month-old daughter's teething and rough play, though we do try not to let her have them without supervision, because they are such nice books that we don't want her to completely destroy them. She loves each one and demands to read them all several times a day.
