So, I bought this book because I had read the Complexity Theory chapter in a class and found it very interesting. I was hoping for some new insight from Dr. VanPatten in this book, as it is so recent. There are definitely some big names contributing to the book's success ,but I see some major holes missing from this textbook. Krashen is missing and should've written a chapter instead of just being part of Chapter 2. Also, why not have Schmidt give a brief chapter about the Noticing Hypothesis? Just two pages doesn't seem enough- there's so much research on it! Finally, (and I know it's not a specific theory), but where are the individual differences? How about a chapter discussing how the theories deal with different individual differences? That would be worth reading.Glad to see a Gator in the book, though!Was also dissatisfied with the used quality of the book I received. I expected highlighter and a few notes here and there, but it appears that the last owner used it as a scratch pad for who knows what. There's even a page with answers to a quiz on it? I hope the last owner got a good grade.

Very good text for ESL teacher programs. Each theory is organized around the same concepts - a definition, what counts as evidence for the theory, common misunderstandings, an exemplary study, how the theory addresses the observable phenomena of SLA and the Explicit/Implicit debate. The organization opens many possibilities for class projects and discussions.
Needed this for a class. Exactly as described.
I really think this book is very useful. this is one of my textbook for SLA. I like my professor Ben! He recommended this one. It is a great book!
