And lets not forget about the husband in all of this, after all he pays the bills. He's for example mentioned when it comes to personal grooming: "When your husband's eyes light up as he comes at in at night, you're in sad shape if it's only because he smells dinner cooking." The fun thing is that when you expect the book to be all about silly fashion rules or just to be very conservative in general, it's actually quite open to experimenting with clothes (although within certain limits) and quite funny, something that becomes clear on the chapter on breaking the rules as well as the fashion IQ test at the end of the book. And I guess that these days, with all kinds of synthetic materials and bad tailoring, that it is a useful source for how to care for (and wear) tweeds and furs like they used in the old days. Now the 1950s are looking very good to me. The book was first published in 1959 - prime time in my mother's life - and has just been re-issued with an introduction by fashion writer Rosemary Feitelberg. It is about the care and feeding of a woman's wardrobe so that she will always look great for her husband and her appearance will never reflect badly on him. As a wife, she writes, you are "an appendage of your husband, Adam's rib that was separated from him to form woman and now spiritually return to his side." Retro, dated and sexist, sure. But Fogarty's irrepressible enthusiasm for her subject makes this book a delight. It is a combination of fashion savvy and wifely advice, and it gives a pretty clear picture of what was expected of women in the late 1950s and early 1960s. For those of us who had mothers who lived during the time of kid gloves, fur wraps, billowing petticoats and dressing up to go into town, reading this book is like waking from a half-remembered dream. I am glad all the reviews were positive except for 1 (who complained about it not being applicable to her life with a small child) Of course some of the principles are in conjunction with the times and the protocol of that era and a womans position in it cannot be utilized today practically, but if you can look past that, and look to the heart of the book's message; stay attractive for your husband by keeping up your appearence and dress appropriately for every occasion you will find timeless information in it pages which are applicable today. I saw a woman show up to my friends wedding in a jean skirt, top and sandals while every one else was dressed "after five" and she herself was newly married with a child! Too many of us in the name of libeation and comfort have completely neglected our appearence once we get married and have children. No one is saying you have to wax the floor in high heels and a corseted dress with apron a la 1950's t.v. but ditching the "spit-up" stained shirt, put on a little make-up and purfume and give your husband a pleasant vision when he walks though the door (if you are a stay at home mom) giving him something to smile about other than the remote control and easy chair. Personaly, I love the book and look forward to applying the principles as I am able to when I get married and maybe I will have 15 steamer trunks of clothes to take with me on my honeymoon! : )

I've read Wife Dressing four times in two months. It's so much fun and even after all these years the fashion advice still works. I haven't worn white shortie gloves since the last family funeral and haven't worn a petticoat since last week but the basic theme works just fine. Let's face it, all you have to do is go to Target or Walmart on a Friday night and you'll see that a lot of married women look bad. Curlers in the hair, pajamas or stained sweats, bedroom slippers, and fat rolls escaping from their tops. They figure that hey, they're married and their man aint going anywhere so why make an effort? Anne Fogarty, who sounds very much like the fabulous top girl in high school that you longed to hang with but were just a tiny bit scared of, would've hated women like that.She was a wife but a business woman first and possessed incredible discipline.She was smart enough to realize that nobody can have it all or do it all. She had a staff at work and a housekeeper at home. When she was away from work she lavished attention on her husband. When the marriage didn't work she tightened her girdle and moved on.From her 18 inch(!) waist to her glistening white gloves and ability to plan her whole day like a war campaign, Fogarty didn't believe in ugliness, laziness or a letting a chance to find beauty in everything pass by. I've learned, I've laughed and I'm using the tote bag trick.

Having been an illustrator for years and artist most of my life, I came upon this book - lost in the overwhelming galaxy of anatomy books for artists online and elsewhere - and bought it thinking it looked okay based on the pictures of the inside of the book on Amazon. I bought it at the same time that I bought about 5 other anatomy books, many of them elaborately illustrated with HD photographs and overlays, often ten times more expensive than this little, compact book written by David Kresz Rubins in 1953. But those other books still - for the most part - sit on my desk in a neat pile only occasionally used.This book, however, is extraordinary in its simple yet detailed display of muscles and how bones are wrapped in them, how the body can move and why, and why it looks the way it does. The amazingly clear way that Rubins shows each part of the body, layering it up from bones to muscles to skin, and then shows those parts of the body bending and twisting, and how those forms are created by what's beneath - is really tremendously helpful. He's really detailing the architecture of the body, and I've copied his drawings a great deal. It's a jewel of a book.If you spend time with it and really study and draw from its contents you will advance your anatomical understanding by leagues.

One of the best books about the human figure. It was recommended by one of my art professors and he was so right. Each page has in-depth illustrations with perfect explanations on each part of the body. If you take it step by step through the whole book you will be learning how to identify and draw each part of the body. The art is crisp and clean which is why I recommend taking a colored pencil and filling in each different piece with a color to help you break up each section. The book I ordered was used, but came with no marks, no bent pages and over-all was what I considered to be like-new quality.

I used extensively a copy of the book from the local library and loved it so much that I decided to own one. I ordered the same Dover edition and was disappointed to find out that the quality of the print is much worse than the copy from the library. The bad rating is only due to the poor reprint, the book itself is great

This is a must read/ study and copy text for art students. Be aware that over the years the reproductions are losing details as if something were being copied from a copy etc. What you would expect from etchings but not a modern printing process.

Very nice little book. The illustrations will make for good practice. The book itself, for whatever reason, has a very strong smell of pinesol or something. It's weird and I hope it goes away because it's very strong.Great book!

I bought this used in "very good condition" from Yellow Square Books and it arrived with the cover falling off, frayed edged and writing need pages.The book itself is a great tool for learning form though, 4/4 for the book if it were remotely in good condition.

This is a nice, concise reference for human figure drawing. It covers each layer with a nice set of of the 4 major angles with some accessory drawings showing how things work. Its not definitive but it is a much smaller and lighter book making it far more portable and far easier to flip through when you need a quick reference.

I'm going to preface this by saying that I am a huge fan of Sarah J. Maas. Her writing is great. Her stories are intriguing and filled with adventure and danger and secrets and magic and friendship and love. They're highly entertaining, emotional, and grapple with big ideas. Are they without flaw? No. But I never thought I'd give a piece of her writing less than four stars.But here we are.I really wanted to love Frost & Starlight with the same boundless vigor that I give the original trilogy. But I just...didn't. To be honest, I'm weirded out. This is new territory for me.A Court of Frost and Starlight is a novella, clocking in at 229 pages, with a 20 page sneak peek at the next full-length book of the Court series, which has no set publication date at this time. From the beginning, it has been marketed as a bridge between the original trilogy and the spinoff series. Set in the Night Court over the Winter Solstice, it is, according to the jacket copy, a "tale of hope and promise" crammed with character development that will have a "far-reaching impact on the future of [the] court."I'm aware of this. I know there's only so much a writer can accomplish in 229 pages. I did not expect anything on the same level of her full-length novels. Part of me likes the domestic fanfiction-y vibe a majority of the book embraces. Emotionally-driven characters have been a staple and a strength of this series from the beginning. It's not a bad read.It's just not...a necessary read.Are there important plot elements introduced that lay groundwork for the spinoff series? Sure!Did they require an entire novella to set them up? Nope!I think my reaction is so lackluster because, to me, there wasn't anything major to react to. The most exciting part was the 20 page sneak peek, which made me shriek and hug things and wonder when the first spinoff novel would actually come out, because I want that book. That book is going to shake me up.But honestly? I was happy with where A Court of Wings & Ruin left everyone. I don't think I needed Frost & Starlight to hold my hand and lead me towards the next trilogy.Honestly, Frost & Starlight felt kind of like fan service. It gave us the highly anticipated wall scene (which my asexual ass skimmed through) but other than that?I acknowledge that there's no way to properly judge the success and relevance of Frost & Starlight as a bridge between series until we have Spinoff #1 in our hands. But I have this feeling that, down the road when both Court trilogies are on my shelf, Frost & Starlight will join Crown of Midnight in the "books that I skip over during rereads" category.Now, I still respect Sarah J. Maas, madly and wildly. She's a grown-ass writer who can make her own grown-ass choices about what she writes and what she chooses to publish. Am I mad that she published it? No. Am I judging other fans who really loved it? Hell no! It's not policy for me to shame anyone for liking what they like.But I would be doing myself and my brand a disservice by not reviewing honestly, so here we are.A Court of Frost & Starlight simmers with promises, but foreshadowed more than it actually delivered.

Being a fan of both TOG and ACOTAR, I was excited and looking forward to another great read. Sadly, I was deeply disappointed with this book. I understand wanting to bridge the new series (one I will definitely be reading), but this book felt pointless. Upon finishing the book, I felt like I had just read the most lengthy and long-winded prologue ever. I’m sorry, but even as a SJ fan I’d have to say skip this book and wait until the new series :-(

I would call spoiler alert, but really this is more like a list of non-spoilers. As in, here is a list (in no particular order) of subplots that are introduced in the second and third installments that are not resolved in this book. Lucien and Tamlin, still at odds. Lucien and Elain, still awkward. Elain and Azriel, no real advancement. Nesta and Cassian, further apart. Bryaxis, still at large. Nesta’s strangeness, about to be explored when Hybern’s Ravens attacked the library, unexplained and deepened. Mor, still alone and unfulfilled. Eris, whose character hinted previously as having some redemptive possibilities, untouched. Helion’s role as Lucien’s true father, also untouched. Treaty between Fae and human, unsettled. Jurian and Vassa, closer buddies now with Lucien, but again, no developments.No meat really in this book, and the reviews that mention its resemblance to fan fiction? Spot on. Lots of window dressing, like “here are all the pretty things we can buy with all our money and sumptuous gowns we can wear and seaside houses we can live in” ... really like playing dolls with familiar characters.Hugely disappointed to have waited a year for this; I’d have much preferred waiting two years and gotten a fourth installment of substance. If this was to satisfy a publisher’s quota, they truly did Ms. Maas and her fans a disservice.Finally, to pay $9 for a book that’s a third of the length of its predecessors is just adding insult to injury.

I love Maas and avidly devoure her writing. This is my favorite series and is near to my heart. But, This book and its lackluster storyline (if you want to call it as such) makes me wonder.I’ve never imagined giving any of Maas’ books under 4 stars. I genuinely feel like this was a feel good money grab. I’m not sure if that’s really all it was, because calling it a novella feels like a gross overstatement. Or, maybe Maas is simply being pressured to produce too much in too little time.Save yourself the money and find a copy of the 20 page preview for the next installment. I promise that’s worth sinking your teeth into.

I was so disappointed by this 4th installment of the quite enjoyable Court of Thorns and Roses saga. The whole book was nothing but the filler you’d expect to find between the action and suspense. We all know how Rhys and Feyre feel about each other, Nesta’s whining, Elian’s fragile innocence, Cassians brooding over Nesta, Lucien’s, well...I don’t know what’s up with Lucien, Etc, etc, etc. This book was thoroughly a waste of time and money.

An entertaining peek into the lives of characters we love. I'm a newcomer to this world, only discovering A Court of Thorns and Roses 2 months ago. Since then I've inhaled the original trilogy and devoured this novella in the last 24 hours. I thought I would be annoyed by multiple points of view (2 of them 1st person), however, it was thoroughly enjoyable and completely works as long as you remember what this novella/novelette is: a short story whose purpose is to lay the groundwork for some hopefully action-packed full-length novels to come. I feel like this also gave me some resolutions for Rhys and Feyre that the last book lacked (I won't spoil them for you, but it was satisfying to see for those who felt like those 2 had some more work to do). All in all, I'm glad I bought it and look forward to rereading all 4 books again!

As I said it before, I like to read juvenile books. they are short, easy to read, and has all the basic information.I don't know much about this part of the history, so i can't comment on if it has all the correct information or not. It seems that it has all the information, and it is not biased, or tried to say nice things about the wrong things that the USA did to mexico. And it also mentioned about the Mexican heros that fought against the US invaders, etc.Overall, it is a good book to read. Unlike the other book that I read "The Louisiana Purchase (Watts Library: American West)", that book did not mention anything about the native americans at all. If you read that book, you would have thought that there was no one living on the America continent before the white european slaveowners arrived.This book belongs to the "a proud heritage, the hispanic library". I don't see why it is a "proud" heritage, because mexicans' land was robbed by the US government. It should be a shameful history.

The perspective taken on the Mexican War for this volume in The Hispanic Library is made clear in the book's subtitle: "How the United States Gained Its Western Lands." After winning the American Revolution and the Louisiana Purchase it was the Mexican War that supplied the final significant acquisition of land for the continental United States. Carrie Nichols Cantor makes it clear from the start that from an objective standpoint the Mexican War was a war of aquisition, pointing out that it was the U.S. that started the war. A map shows that from this War the U.S. would get all of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and California, as well as the final parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma. In telling the story of this 16-month-long war Cantor is concerned with not only what the dramatic acquisition of territory meant for the United States but for Mexico as well.Cantor examines the years before the war to show how the growing number of immigrants was sending thousands of Americans to the west combined with the feeling of manifest destiny to make a conflict with Mexico inevitable. The provocation for the war is detailed in a chapter that shows the American government and military created a pretext for the war. Rather ironically, the weakest chapter in the book is on the actual war itself, which provides a rather bare-boned description of the strategy and battles. The final chapter looks at the way from an ethical perspective, detailing the rights and wrongs on both sides of a war that ended up being quickly forgotten by most Americans. However, the ending of the book is a rather abrupt transition noting peace has reigned on the once disputed border for more than 150 years and the two nations now enjoy a friendly relationship."The Mexican War: How the United States Gained Its Western Lands" is more a socio-political history than a military history, that goes beyond what students will be getting from their American history textbooks.
