I also have a combined military and health sciences background, so I wanted to take in Hertling's perspective on leadership in healthcare. For those with Army leadership experience, there is a substantial thread of familiarity, as Hertling leans on his own experience and how the Army leader development model applies to leaders in many environments. For those in healthcare without the military angle, his straightforward approach and thinking points meld nicely with examples of these principles in follow-up 'war stories' that leave a memorable impression.Rounding out with a firsthand perspective from a physician at the end leaves a nice transitional impact. Leadership is a professional skill to hone like any other, and the practical perspectives in Growing Physician Leaders make it a great resource for emerging leaders in all health disciplines.
General Hertling has brought his four decades of military experience and leadership success into a very readable and practical book on leadership. Although it is specifically directed towards physicians, it is equally applicable for all professional, whether attorneys, or chaplains. Mark Hertling does a phenomenal job with "Growing Physician Leaders" of highlighting then dissecting common leadership traits employed to grow our future leaders in the medical community. He relives some of the leadership challenges he faced during his 40-year U.S. Army career and applies his lessons learned that are easily understandable, then tested through training our up and coming physicians, nurses, and hospital administrators in today's medical community. He writes in a conversational manner and leads the reader through "There we were..." war stories that I found uncanny in how they not only relate to the medical community, but to any functioning organization in the world today. I felt there were many times when he could simply have said (Insert your company name here) and his leadership lesson would hit each reader even closer to home. As a retired USAF Lt. Col., I was amazed at how this retired 3-Star General reinforced certain leadership functions, traits, and outcomes I learned via my officer and flight training schools followed by my MBA program studies, then opened my eyes even further to others I had never seen before. I highly recommend this book for all, but especially physicians, nurses and hospital administrators (young and old), and all of today's business leaders. Order your copy today. We as physicians cannot bury our head into sand anymore. As current healthcare political climate has devalued our profession with patient satisfaction scores, non-physician providers fighting for independence, and our ignorance of business processes, we physicians must lead. We must lead by humbling our egos, by learning the business of medicine, and by guiding our patients to better outcomes. Physicians know what is best for the patient and we must do a much better job in the leadership of medicine for our patients. Great book on how we can. . . how we need . . . and how we must lead healthcare.
It is easy to relate to with poignant vignettes no matter your background. It is also a road map for any organization that wants to provide leadership training, and thus improve the atmosphere and effectiveness of their work place. The book provides lessons for managers, and tools for self-evaluation. This is definitely a prescription for dealing with one of the biggest issues, work place stress, that costs billions in mental health care, absenteeism, etc...and what a great way to start combating this by working with the tip of the spear--medical professionals. His respect for medical health care professionals is warranted, as their service to the country warrants elevation.
As a student of history and the impact leaders have had on it, I have always been amazed that some of the most intelligent and talented members of society normally did not rise as great leaders. Doctors and the medical profession, in general, has suffered from that situation. LTG Hertling's premise (and a foundational one at West Point) is that leaders are trained and continue to develop throughout their lives. The book is a solid primer on how the medical profession can, by developing its leaders, make a significant and positive impact on our society. This an easy to digest primer on leadership and how to develop leaders, based on time tested and proven techniques used by our Army to develop high performing leaders and teams. A great book for doctors, as well as any students of leadership. Well done!
General Hertling does a fantastic job identifying issues facing physician leaders and the interface between physicians and administrators. More importantly he identifies processes to overcome obstacles along the path. I'd strongly recommend this to physicians, especially those entering into formal leadership roles. I would absolutely recommend this to all hospital and health system administrators.
