Naked, by David Sedaris

From Library Journal

Sedaris (Barrel Fever, LJ 5/1/94) has fashioned a funny memoir of his wonderfully offbeat life. To call his family "dysfunctional" would be enormous understatement and beside the point; Sedaris's relatives and other companions become vital characters on the page. We see his mother serving drinks to the string of teachers who want to discuss her son's compulsions to lick light switches and make high-pitched noises. We travel with Sedaris and his quadriplegic hitchhiking companion, listen to his foul-mouthed seat mate on a long bus trip, and accompany the author on a hilariously self-conscious visit to a nudist colony. Sedaris's humor is wickedly irreverent but not mean. Traveling with him is well worth it for the laughs and his generous human sensibility. Highly recommended.?Mary Paumier Jones, Rochester P.L., N.Y.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Readers familiar with Sedaris' hilarious National Public Radio commentaries will hear his distinctive radio voice in their minds as they read his newest collection of wicked autobiographical writings, but few if any of these unnervingly frank, cynical, and explicit tales are suitable for the airwaves--and therein lies their power. As Sedaris chronicles the low points of his life, from his suffering as a boy from debilitatingly compulsive behavior (licking light switches, counting steps) to his earliest, terrifying intimations of his homosexuality, to some near-death hitchhiking experiences, he goes further than he's ever gone before, leaving his readers breathless with laughter and wide-eyed with wonder at his daring both out in the world and on the page. A self-described "smart-ass," Sedaris is a gifted satirist with an uncanny knack for re-creating dialogue and revealing fantasies. And his targets are always worthy: people of wretched insensitivity and prejudice, be it sexual or racial. Brutally honest and brilliantly eloquent, Sedaris is positively tonic. Donna Seaman

As always with a new book by David Sedaris, I can hardly wait to get it and I am never disappointed. Naked is wonderful. I always feel as if Mr. Sedaris (who I think of as David because I feel like I've known him all my life) can see straight into my brain and give me the gift of hours of pleasure knowing there is someone as wacky and obsessed with the funny bits of life as I am. I would recommend this book to anyone with a good sense of humor and a desire to see the both the frailty and grandness of the human condition. Definitely another laugh-out-loud journey through David's fabulous mind.

Not that our hero was diagnosed as autistic as a child. Sure, he licked light switches, observed strange daily rituals, and was OCD to the max. But back in the carefree 50's and 60's, people knew very little about childhood disabilities and (for the most part) cared even less.A kid who behaved in socially inappropriate ways was "weird." Unless his parents or teachers could beat the weirdness of him, he STAYED weird. And thus little David Sedaris continued to mystify and irritate the adults around him right up until he went off to college. Then he discovered the miracle of illegal drugs and, from that point on, no explanation for his weirdness was needed. Praise Jesus! It's a miracle!I discovered Sedaris two years ago and went through his books like shot through a goose. At first they seem like a confusing series of unrelated stories, which they ARE. But there's some method to the madness, although the madness always outweighs the method. It helps if you realize that his life divides into three sections: his childhood with his solidly middle-class, but horrifyingly dysfunctional family; his time as a rebellious and notably unsuccessful young man, alternating between unhappy stints at various colleges and stretches of menial jobs and close contact with people most of us would run miles to avoid; and finally his life as a writer and partner to the reassuringly normal Hugh.So there's an over-all chronological order, although he never makes any attempt to knit his stories into a coherent whole. That's YOUR job, reader. So roll up your sleeves and start reading. With two wildly mismatched parents and a cast of strange siblings, he was doomed from birth to either end up in a mental hospital or with some REALLY great material. Actually, he's been in a mental hospital, but as a teen-aged volunteer for two summers. What kid wants to spend his summers exploring the nuances of insanity? David Sedaris, that's who. What's my favorite? Tough to say. LOVED the saga of his teen-aged sister bringing home the raddled, but charmingly naive prostitute for Christmas. Know-it-all pater familias Lou Sedaris was determined for his offspring to start earning their keep at an early age. Nothing like the value of hard work and you meet such nice people employed at a cafeteria that hires parolees. These stories are sometimes horrifying and sometimes sad and frequently hilarious. Many of them are all three at the same time, much like life. If you're easily offended or have a cardiac condition that puts you at risk, better skip them. Otherwise, fasten your seat belt and enjoy.

Naked had been sitting on my shelf for at least a year before I decided to read it. I have a bad habit of not reading books after I buy them, so this should come as no surprise. As a memoir, Naked is an unbelievably good collection of autobiographical essays. As you make your way through Naked, you just find yourself in disbelief at Sedaris' dysfunctional family. Everyone out there claims to have some sort of dysfunctional family, but Sedaris' truly takes the cake. From the authors childhood filled with his nervous tics and OCD habits to his teachers visiting his home while being offered alcoholic beverages while watching his mother make mock impersonations of her son. It makes you really feel for the author. The best part of Naked by far is the Ya-Ya, Sedaris' grandmother. It makes me wish I had at least one grandmother just like her growing up. If you don't find yourself laughing out loud at least once, you don't have a sense of humor :). Then the authors tales as a long-time hitchhiker while doing a wide variety of manual labor jobs give readers like myself hope that haven't quite figured out who they are or what they want to do in life. On a personal level, these tales were really what I liked the most about Sedaris. The fact that he's come out of all of the hell and many years of uncertainty/wandering to become a successful author and playwright is truly inspiring. It just goes to show you anything is possible, even if it takes until much later in life to figure it out.My gripe with Naked comes as a "side-splitting" and "hilariously entertaining" memoir. For me, the humor started to die around the time Sedaris goes away to camp for a month. From that point on, the novel's comedic aspect drops off significantly. Granted, the novel definitely takes on a darker tone up until the last few chapters, but it was my expectation that it'd be funny for more than just half the book. In that regard, the reviews and descriptions of the book disappointed me.Overall, it's definitely a worthwhile read for anyone who wants to be genuinely captivated by another persons trials and tribulations as well as how they overcame them. Just don't expect to be a comedy from start to finish. I wouldn't quite give it 4 stars, but more along the lines of 3.5 stars. As it's been out for about 14 years now, Naked is certainly a bargain for the price. So if you end up not liking it as much as you thought, it won't have burned a large hole in your wallet. :)-Travis S.

The leader of our Writer's Intensive used this book as the main format on descriptive content. I found it a perfect choice, as Sedaris' ability to bring the writer into his world was remarkable. He never left out a detail, at the same time he did not over expand either. His stories were raw, offensive and real. This is the stuff the world hides from and will die before admitting. Sedaris brings out the politically incorrect in all of us and explodes it in the streets. If you feel isolated on this planet; if you feel nobody could have come from a messed up family as yours, read this book. It really serves to bring humanity closer together in the most uncanny and humorous way. He is funny! One of the best books/memoirs I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Absolutely amazing.

I have been following Chapo for a long time. This book was especially interesting since I have traveled to Mazatlan for 35 years and I happened to be in Mazatlan the day he was captured. A good friend who works at a local restaurant was there early that morning and described what was going on so early in the morning. I have been past the Miramar Hotel numerous times. I felt Andrew and his partner did a great job telling the story. I am familiar with many of the places in the book. Thank you for telling the story and am looking forward to the movie next!

I usually love books like this, but this one seems to be too much about the author himself and the 1st capture of Chapo. I was hoping for even more detail on Chapo and his org, and more detail on the 2nd capture of Chapo which the author was not a part of and is the epilogue of this book. I appreciate what the author did in capturing Chapo, I just expected a more rounded story (less of I did this, and I said this, etc)

When a book is written well, you can't help but need to know what's on the next page,That's this book. The highs and the lows, adrenaline, fatigue, its all here. Following agentHogan in his pursuit of public enemy #1. Recommend this book for anyone wondering what ourDEA and HSI agents to through in pursuit of criminals, a real eye opener.

‘Hunting El Chapo: The Inside Story of the American Lawman Who Captured the World's Most-Wanted Drug Lord’ is a classic manhunt story, presented in a meticulous fashion that nonetheless makes for a brisk and exciting read. It largely eschews the cheap thrills of pitched gun battles for an intimate look at the more thankless aspects of such a large operation. Until the final act, El Chapo himself remains an elusive phantom who seems to specialize in last minute escapes. The reader is made to understand exactly how he was caught, and how such a victory can ultimately be seen as largely pyrrhic. This book is well worth the cover price, and a worthy edition to any true crime library.

I just finished the book. Great read. I’ve been in law enforcement for over twenty years. Anyone that has been involved in long term investigations know it’s a team effort. The author tells his side of the story. If there are individuals who feel that credit wasn’t given where credit is due, I encourage them to take the time to write their side of story, get it published and I would be happy to buy it.

What a great story about how the DEA works and how they are able to track anyone electronically. The story talks about how they listened to all the business traffic Chapo's organization for years was passing on their Blackberry's The DEA new all the players and living habits of El Chapo and his people. The roll of the Mexican Marines were trustworthy and a valuable asset in the capture of El Chapo. Something that is very rare in Mexico..

As the resident of a border town I am fascinated with issues involving the drug trade and the players involved. Drew does a great job telling his story in a fast-paced, entertaining style. I highly recommend this book..

Although somewhat self-serving and boastful at times, Hogan and his ghost writer do a good job of bringing this story to light. I found it very interesting and readable.

Review

"At last, the Eastern Caribbean has the dive guide it deserves. " Volume I covers the Caribbean Islands from Dominica to Tobago. The first book of its kind for the area, The Complete Diving Guide - The Caribbean Volume 1 by Colleen Ryan and Brian Savage is meticulously researched and packed with useful information. The book describes over 240 dive sites and covers 50 extensively, and includes full-color underwater site plans. All in all, the guide contains everything a diver needs to know to decide which island to dive and where to stay, which operators to dive with, which sites to visit, what to expect to see and even which camera lenses to use to capture on film what you actually see. " -- PADI Undersea Journal - First Quarter 1998"The Complete Diving Guide - The Caribbean (Volume 1) is exactly what it professes to be. Intended to be the first in a series, it looks at the southern islands of the Eastern Caribbean. Each chapter starts with a short island introduction followed by a very specific description of the dive sites, operators and hotels. The write-ups of the dive sites are full of interesting personal experiences. The rest of the chapter provides just the sort of information you need, such as which operators have english speaking dive guides and which recognise the depth limitations of BSAC rather than PADI. Throughput the book's 390 information-packed pages are numerous interesting side panels. One describes the ships that sank in St. Pierre Harbour on Martinique when Mount Pelee erupted in 1902. The resulting dive sites sound so fascinating that I at once booked a trip to the island. Surely this is the acid test of a dive guide?" -- Diver Magazine, October 1998, Brendan O'Brien"This book on the area is a must for visitors and tour group leaders" -- PADI Undersea Journal - Second Quarter 1998

From the Author

We are PADI dive instructors and combine our love of diving with sailing aboard our yacht Theta Volantis. We arrived in the Caribbean in 1994 anticipating a few years of sailing and diving the Eastern Caribbean Islands. We soon found that there were no detailed diving guides that would enable us to decide where we would find the type of diving we enjoy. We wanted to know which islands had good visibility and sheltered sites suitable for underwater photography; which had the steep walls and fast drifts that would give us exciting diving; which had good wrecks; which islands should we take our novice friends to; and where would we find sites we could dive independently from our yacht? Because we were able to sail from island to island on our yacht we were fortunate to be able to sample the diving everywhere. But we realised that someone planning a vacation would not have that opportunity and by then we had discovered how different the diving was on each of the islands and what a wide range of quality of service was offered by the dive operators. So, in the absence of a truly comprehensive and objective guide, we decided to write one. The Complete Diving Guide Series is the result of 5 years researching the diving in the Eastern Caribbean. We spent months on each island instead of the normal one or two week vacation that most people have, so we were able to study the diving and the operators in depth. We did some great diving and gained a real insight into the diving business in this region. In the course of our research we met many diving vacationers and often, in the absence of good information, they had not made the best choice of island (or even the best location on that island) for their particular diving needs. We have written the type of diving guide we wanted to be able buy and we hope that our readers can make better informed decisions about their choice of diving vacation in the Eastern Caribbean.

I am a dive instructor in the Virgin Islands. This book is a huge help to me when people want to go to a site I have yet to explore. The only negative that I can see is that some of the information regarding dive operations is rather dated in the book as well as on their web site. But then again businesses open/close/change hands so often down here I understand the problem.

The book is designed to offer a good list of places to scuba relying on the use of dive operators - it lists many. Its use for a couple who just wish to go alone (in a buddy system, of course) is limited, since the locations are not exactly defined. The book also offers a lot of advice as to many facets of diving in these areas. In general, it is an excellent book with the caveat of not giving exact coordinates nor reference points by which to find the specific spots.

I have been meaning to review this book for some time as it is one of the most thumbed books on our book shelf. My wife and I run a charter yacht in the Virgin Islands and many of our guests are keen divers. We bought The Complete Diving Guide for our own use initially but it has since become part of the yacht's library as our guests find it so useful and enjoyable to read. (as our copy is getting rather worn I'm pleased to say that many of them buy their own copy after having seen ours). It is rare to find a book that is so comprehensive and which presents a vast amount of information in such a readable manner. In particular we find the island and dive site maps useful along with the descriptions of the dives and the underwater route maps. I can direct our guests at the tyupe of dive that I think they would enjoy and they can read about it beforehand. They can also choose the dive store they would like to use. I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone planning to do some diving in the Virgin Islands (it even covers the Spanish Virgin Islands).

I'd definitely give this guide full marks. It's without doubt the most comprehensive of the guides I looked at for the area I was travelling to (the Virgin Islands). It had everything we could have wanted to know and it definitely meant we did some better diving than we'd have done without it. We particularly liked that it gave us information about the British and US Virgin Islands and as they are less than 5 miles apart it's simple to dive both areas. They have some really different types of diving and we'd have missed out on a lot without the guide. We bought the book before we went but we took it along with us and used it all the time. One of the things we enjoyed reading was the descriptions of the dives and the sections about the marine life. We've been diving for over 10 years and I've learnt more from this book than I have in my previous years of diving.

Just bought the digital version of the PR Diving guide. I can tell right off this is a five star publication. Lots of extra information about the reefs. It seems the author likes what he does and wants to share. When we move locations I'll buy the next guide also.

This is one of the most thorough and up to date dive travel books I've ever read. We used a lot of the information on diving and related material on our recent trip to P.R. and found it very helpfull and accurate.

This book is very thorough on the coverage that I was looking for. I recommend this book. Actually, I couldn't find any other books that covered Puerto Rico.

Rick uses the American Five Superheterodyne as an example to take you step by step through how the radio works and how to repair and restore it.But, don't be fooled by the title or the fact that this book is on how to restore the American Five Radio it has a wealth of information that applies to restoring all old tube radios.I learned more from this book than anything I have ever come across on radio and it has become my "manual" on restoring old radios. The thing I really like about it is the style that it is written in for the non-electrician that takes you through how the radio actually works. You will really understand after going through it not just how to replace a capacitor but how the radio processes the signals etc...I would recommend you get the book and an old american five radio like the one in the book off eBay or elsewhere and go step by step through the book as you restore it. (that is what I am doing)By the time you are done you will have a great education in radio and radio restoration that will serve you very well in any future projects.I bought this after watching joernone's videos on radio restoration on YouTube. John gives the credit to Rick (Rick is AllAmericanFiveRadio on YouTube)for teaching him how to do radio restoration and now I give John and Rick credit for my learning this great hobby. You can't go wrong with this book.Tom

This book is the first one about tube radios that anyone should read. The Author lays out a circuit diagram and walks you through each section with both the electrical diagram and a drawing of the actual components. He describes the function of each section and explains what happens to the signal in each stage, teaching you HOW the radio functions. This kind of knowledge is then used to show what test voltages should be at each stage and how to diagnose faults. it's plainly explained and clear, being the first time I've ever read a text that instantly made sense to me. The only strange thing is that the Author starts at the speaker and works back to the incoming radio signal. that might make sense to some people but it didn't work for me so I just read the chapters backwards, following the signal as it came into the set and was transformed into audible sound. And a quick check of three dead radios in my garage show they all use nearly this identical circuit, right down to the tube types and locations. This has to be the best book to start with even if you are fixing a transformer radio.

this book is written for the beginner. the author explains step by step what each component is and what it does. and this info can be applied to other radios. if you are a beginner i would recommend this book.

In my opinion, if you are new to radio restoration, this is the kind of radio to start with. This book has a lot of information that will be helpful to you, especially on how to evaluate and test you radio. It is by no means complete but it is brief and helpful.

Great for understanding how a radio functions, with a beginning of good old electricity. Must have to understand how to repair tube radios. Highly recommended.

This is a great little book for the aspiring radio tech. It gets right to the basic facts needed to get started on your first radio repair. The author has many free educational videos on YouTube that are very well done with enhanced schematics and tutorials.

This is a great book to learn how an all American five tube radio works but there is little about how to restore them. The first quarter of the book is basics on what resistors and capacitors are, how they work and basic ohm's law. Almost all the rest of the book is how radio works. Oddly this is done backwards from the speaker making sound to the antenna picking up the electromagnetic waves making it harder to understand.Only the last few pages say anything about how to fix the radios and this information is very very basic and nearly useless. There is nothing about how to fix the cabinets. I did not notice much if anything about equipment such as an isolation transformer needed for safety on these radios, variac, oscilloscope, tube testers, vacuum tube meters, and multimeters.I would give this book two stars but for the fact for someone just starting out this book might be good to learn how radio receivers work as long as you read that part backwards from how it is written. There are far better resources out there to learn how to restore these radios.

Clearly written. Very easy to understand. Good for the beginner or rekindle interest for a prior radio restorer.

The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature, by Steven Pinker

From Publishers Weekly

In his last outing, How the Mind Works, the author of the well-received The Language Instinct made a case for evolutionary psychology or the view that human beings have a hard-wired nature that evolved over time. This book returns to that still-controversial territory in order to shore it up in the public sphere. Drawing on decades of research in the "sciences of human nature," Pinker, a chaired professor of psychology at MIT, attacks the notion that an infant's mind is a blank slate, arguing instead that human beings have an inherited universal structure shaped by the demands made upon the species for survival, albeit with plenty of room for cultural and individual variation. For those who have been following the sciences in question including cognitive science, neuroscience, behavioral genetics and evolutionary psychology much of the evidence will be familiar, yet Pinker's clear and witty presentation, complete with comic strips and allusions to writers from Woody Allen to Emily Dickinson, keeps the material fresh. What might amaze is the persistent, often vitriolic resistance to these findings Pinker presents and systematically takes apart, decrying the hold of the "blank slate" and other orthodoxies on intellectual life. He goes on to tour what science currently claims to know about human nature, including its cognitive, intuitive and emotional faculties, and shows what light this research can shed on such thorny topics as gender inequality, child-rearing and modern art. Pinker's synthesizing of many fields is impressive but uneven, especially when he ventures into moral philosophy and religion; examples like "Even Hitler thought he was carrying out the will of God" violate Pinker's own principle that one should not exploit Nazism "for rhetorical clout." For the most part, however, the book is persuasive and illuminating.Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I picked up this book since Richard Dawkins talked about his work with Mr Pinker on his chapter of evolution. Like Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker doesn't shy away from controversy, and just like Dawkins he's extremely well educated in his subjects in the smallest of details. He lights up a giant science blowtorch to both the left and the right's notions regarding human nature. As a parent of two children I was particularly interested in his parenting section, where the argument of "nature VS nurture" is torched. Explanations for how a parent does and doesn't shape their kids are unique, basically he's saying that parents are less significant than the rest of the environment (country, region, city/town) and what the culture that environment provides. While this might appear a "it takes a village" leftist argument, in reality it's just a common sense argument that I see every day as a person who left home to move to a different part of the world and after meeting a girl there; watch as my children grow up here and how different they are from me as a child and are more like other children here. Yet at the same time his use of adoption studies and separated twin studies are at once fascinating and also hard to argue against as he explains how much of us is in the genes and not in that environment. On crime and IQ he dispels moral notions and poses new ones as he explains our newfound ability to determine a person's pre-disposition to violent or peaceful conflict resolution via brain scans, which he admits should have been expected after the extraordinary 19th century case of Phineas Gage surviving a traumatic brain injury and his behavior change predicted it.He also tackles race, gender, and many other hot issues.

This book is about science and politics. Pinker took on the project this book represents after colleagues told him that little boys are aggressive because they’re socialized to be, teenagers get the idea to compete for appearance thanks to spelling bee awards, and men think sex is desirable because society tells them it is. In other words, humans are born a blank slate, only nurture, not nature, will make them what they are. “This is the mentality of a cult,” writes Pinker, “in which fantastical beliefs are flaunted as proof of one’s piety. This mentality cannot exist with an esteem for truth… [and is] responsible for unfortunate trends… [like] a stated contempt among many scholars for the concepts of truth, logic, and evidence, and the inevitable reaction [of] politically incorrect shock jocks who revel in anti-intellectualism and bigotry, emboldened by the knowledge that the intellectual establishment has forfeited claims of credibility…” Amen to that!Pinker shows the cult fearful of findings from cognitive science, neuroscience, behavioral genetics, and evolutionary physiology. Why? Because they make the errant assumption that pre-wired humans are incapable of being made moral and humane. Their interpretation of statistics was as certainty, not probability. Hence, what we’re now so familiar with from the Right were long before practiced by the Left. Scientific findings were not only denied and vilified, but scientists who dare desecrate the creed were attacked with smear campaigns, character assassination, and words put in their mouth only to pronounce how wrong they were. Even the likes of paleontologist Steven J. Gould (stunned me), geneticist Richard Lewontin (naturally), and the neuroscientist Steven Rose (daft) were dupes for the movement. This troika and the campus snowflakes they inspired labeled E.O. Wilson, Richard Dawkins, and Robert Trivers as genocidal bigots, racists, practitioners of eugenics, Nazis (yawn), and Right-wing prophets of patriarchy (more yawn). All because Wilson et. al. found biology responsible for much of human behavior. (Was this really a surprise?) While Pinker’s focus is social “science” doctrine, not the shock jocks he refers to (Rush Limbaugh etc.), as one reads this book it becomes apparent there’s no difference between the two, other than what they proclaim as sacrosanct and blasphemy. After a history of the blank slate starting with John Locke, followed by the Great Schism and what the cult is trying to protect, Pinker dives into measurement, data, and reason. The identical twin studies were so pronounced and ironclad, I had to reread them, then check references to believe these clones (which is what twins are) could be so identical in their behavior. That is, twins separated at birth, shipped off to different countries, class structures, learning environments, never to know the other or their common parents, found decades later to have the same behaviors in a myriad of the most nuanced and peculiar ways. Biology matters. So it is, with the purifying flames of science separated from politically correct programs of pseudo-morality, Pinker burns just about every quasi-religious Postmodernist liberal dogma in the blank slate arena you can name—with the exception of gender-fluidity, not yet concocted. I hope one day he’ll do the same to Creationists and global warming deniers on the Right. What a thrill, and a shame to find even biologists themselves got caught up in the PC creed of our times. It also clarified for me what almost cannot be done in physics and chemistry (except for transparent liars like Ivar Giaever). Biology, several steps up from the closest thing we’ve got to certainty in the foundations of reality, allows for some fiddle-faddle and hoodwink, so long as the promoter has a notable name like Gould. Limbaugh and Creationists love this. Gould, the troika, and their followers deserve their share of credit for the monster they helped create on the Right as a response to this kind of nonsense.

One of the most interesting books I've ever read. Is at a decent reading level (I would guess grade 12+), but an interesting read for anyone. It is a little all over the place in the first few chapters, but picks up after that and is extremely insightful. Has completely changed how I perceive the world. Would highly recommend to anyone that isn't skeptical of behavioral science.

Even though this book was published a few years back, it is very relevant in 2018. It helps to understand why people view things so differently as soon as human nature is brought into debates. Hopefully people will stop treating well-studied and well-founded scientific truths as though they are "taboo" or unspeakable just because they fear the consequences of admitting that we are not all born innocent and equal.

Important scientific corrective to the current politically correct insanity. And, Pinker's writing is clear and approachable, and sometimes even humorous.

Mr. Pinker is an exceptional thinker, able to correlate detailed knowledge to reach broad and well supported conclusions. I admire anyone who's work is assailed by each of the far ends of the political spectrum. He is a fine writer, clear and entertaining. To me, his only shortcomings are an occasional tendency to use too many words and a tendency to be overly (although justifiably) proud of his work.

This took me a while to get into but by the middle part of the book I was quite focused and enjoying it. My most valuable takeaway has been how science research has given support to what is legitimate in philosophies of human nature on the left AND the right. And what's wrong in those philosophies is where we spend most of our time being defensive and non-productive. Good science wins!

Call Me by Your Name: A Novel

Review

“Call Me by Your Name is a beautiful and wise book, written with both lightness and concentrated care for the precise truth of every moment in its drama. It will rest artfully on the shelves between James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room and Edmund White's A Boy's Own Story. It is also a superb novel about the sensuous light of the Mediterranean summer, the languorous days and nights filled with desire. It has always been clear from Aciman's non-fiction that he would, when the time came, write a wonderful novel, but this is a miracle.” ―Colm Toíbín, author of The Master“If you are prepared to take a hard punch in your gut, and like brave, acute, elated, naked, brutal, tender, humane, and beautiful prose, then you've come to the right place. If you can't handle the violence of the regret it will awaken in you, or the agony of remembering wanting someone more than you wanted anything in your life, or the exquisite suffering that comes with the gain, and loss, of something that neared perfect understanding, then don't read this book. Ditto if you like your literature censored. Otherwise, open the cover and let Aciman pull the pin from the grenade.” ―Nicole Krauss, author of The History of Love

At a time when it appears as though most gay fiction getting published centers around Harlequin-like romances or other popular genre or appears to be meant mainly for titillation, André Aciman’s Call Me By Your Name (2007; 248 pp.) is both a notable exception and a true artistic accomplishment. The novel can be considered a coming-of-age story (a dangerously over-used subgenre in the wrong hands) as well as a love story. Set in 1988 and on the Italian Riviera, which adds to the charm and appeal of the novel, Call Me By Your Name is narrated by and tells the story of a seventeen-year-old American-Italian-Jewish youth, Elio Perlman, and his six-week, summer love affair with Oliver Ulliva, a university professor who is seven years older than Elio and who has been selected to live in Elio’s parents’ home as a guest “resident” while finishing a manuscript for publication as part of the parents’ way of aiding budding writers.Much of the first half of Call Me By Your Name has a “stream of consciousness” feeling to it as Elio, a very precocious and intelligent but shy young man, defies his better intuitions and finds himself more and more attracted to Oliver. Oliver, in turn, appears aloof, enigmatic, or simply unresponsive to the younger man’s growingly obvious infatuation. Aciman beautifully captures the multiple emotions: doubts, worries, hopes, and despair of an apparently one-sided attraction and romance to which any reader, regardless of their sexual orientation, most likely will be able to relate. Elio’s situation and Aicman’s characters and dialogue are all very true to life. Aicman’s references to the Italian setting, its culture, and historic figures (especially artists) add color to his tale without becoming a distraction or principal focus.By time both Elio and the reader are aware of Oliver’s true feelings toward the younger man, a new sense of urgency, an even greater feeling of sensuality and eroticism, and a more intense atmosphere of anxiety and impending doom enters the story—all of it exquisitely captured by Aciman’s exquisitely accomplished writing. The minor characters in Call Me by Your Name are portrayed as lovingly and precisely as the two leads. Elio’s father and a younger female friend who is dying of leukemia, in particular, are given scenes of appealing tenderness and geniality. Both are people readers would like to know and embrace. Call Me By Your Name is filled with psychological insight, beauty, realism, poignancy, melancholy, regret, smiles, wonder, joy and celebration, and pathos. If it is possible for a novel to contain a genuine reflection of what it is like to be a human being, Call Me by Your Name is that novel. The conclusion of Oliver’s six weeks with Elio and his family and the circle of friends he makes while in Italy before returning to the United States ends the way readers know it must, but it is not the conclusion of the novel. In the final chapter entitled “Ghost Spots,” Aciman benevolently gives readers further, later scenes depicting the lives of both Elio and Oliver. The scenes are like the rest of the novel: authentic and discerning with memories both sad and joyous while tinged with an aching, unforgettable bitter sweetness. Upon finishing the novel one can only conclude that Call Me By Your Name is a modern classic.

This book was over the top good. Both in substance and in style. I came to this book from a recommendation form AARP (of all places!) for the soon to come out movie. After digging around it was recommended to read the book. Now I can’t wait to see the movie! I hear the director is top notch and after reading the book, I can give the same compliment to the author. I’m confident in my chosen arena in life, but can say I’m overwhelmed by the talent of the author’s style of writing. I now want to learn more about writing, history and all things Italian.Story line: Being an older gay man I’ve yearned for such talented writers touching on this topic. What was once considered taboo is now accepted. If the roles were reversed to “straight” characters ( like Summer of 42) it wouldn’t be considered taboo. Bravo for being brave and showing how love is love.

I have to preface this review by saying that I am someone who reads frequently and has ordered many, many books on Amazon. However, I have never, until now, felt compelled to review a book."Call Me by Your Name" is a fantastically complex love story. I'vd never read such a pure, real romance featuring two men that does justice to the myriad of emotions that comes with any love affair, but especially one's first "forbidden" love. I think any person who gives it a try will appreciate this story, but it was especially poignant for me as a gay man.I could not put the book down and finished it in just two days. During this time I felt emotions ranging from excitement to genuine heartache. I think this story will stay with me for a long time. I plan to recommend it to many.I could critique a few small things, but they pale in comparison to all the wonderful aspects of this story.

Admittedly, this book starts out almost painfully slow, with a lead-up to the romance that's near torturous when accompanied by the main character and narrator's obsessive thoughts, with the only thing keeping the reader engaged the dangling promise that these two idiots will, eventually, get together. But once it gets going, oh boy does it get going.Let me preface my praises of this book by saying that I had a difficult, love-hate relationship with Elio (protagonist and narrator). His obsessive reading, re-reading, over-reading, over-re-reading into every little look, word, silence, and lack of look, borders on the hysterical if not out-right insane and nearly drives this book's readers (or me, at least) insane right along with him. Not to mention that it nearly breaks the taut string suspending the reader's disbelief because honestly, what teenage even speaks let alone THINKS like this? But after reaching the second act, it's quite clear that this obsessiveness is what has isolated him from his peers and why he searches to be so completely understood by someone like Oliver, who speaks his same coded language of gestures and unspoken words - even though they're often not on the same wave length.Elio's fevered imaginings also make him an almost delightfully unreliable narrator, where something he narrates early on as fact (e.g. the cold, death-glares he'd receive from Oliver) turn out to be misguided by his prejudices and not true at all. It lends a tender, nostalgic quality to the whole thing (which is already close to bursting with nostalgia), knowing that all the events are not as they were but merely as he remembers them.I came to realize that the story was painful to read because it was a painfully exact replica of what it is to be a teenager, and not because it was poorly written or ill-conceived. It intentionally takes its readers back to a time when your insides were on your outsides, all your feelings exposed, leaving you raw and vulnerable, so that every glance, every snide remark, especially from the person you're infatuated with, is like hot knives on your bare flesh. The reason I was so infuriated with Elio was because I was infuriated with myself, when I was a teenager, and felt and behaved the exact same way. Elio, despite his staggering intellect for a seventeen-year-old, is a profound idiot just like I was a profound idiot. The meat of the story is the romance between our leads, slow and painful in its engineering (like a roller-coaster going up), terrifying, rocketing, elating, wonderful when it's happening (the roller-coaster plummeting), that leaves you aching, dizzy, and nauseous in its denouement (the end of the ride). You spend so much time worshiping Oliver through Elio's eyes that when he turns out to be the coward, you refuse to believe it, until you're dragged unwillingly to the book's end are slapped in the face with the reality that yes, Oliver was the coward all along. This is probably one of the most erotic reads of the 21st century, thanks in no small part to the breathless suspense leading up to their first encounter together, but also because the author understands how sensuality is enhanced by disgust. Even though the book sometimes crosses the thin line between sexy gross and full blown gross-out (by the end of the book ALL of the bodily fluids have been prominently featured), it leaves the burning, frenzied sensuality at its core stronger for it.I am confident that the movie adaptation (which I'll be watching soon) will be a perfect companion to this book, as it likely won't suffer from the book's flaws, such as being overly verbose, and its slow pacing on screen will probably feel more like sexual tension than having your nails being summarily torn from your fingers. Nonetheless, the novel contains some of the most stellar, quotable lines you'll ever encounter, and such gut-wrenching realism surrounding its heartbreak that you'll feel it as a hot knife across your raw skin.If I could say one thing to this novel it would be: I'll die if you stop.

Classic book, can't go wrong if you're a tennis enthusiast. What's especially nice about this book is that they have specific drills and patterns for every player type, so you don't necessarily need to read the entire book. You can easily home in on the section specific to your play style.

just the one.

A nice layout of winning point patterns and (hopefully) positive outcomes. A good reference book, but if you're looking for help that is more immediate, I suggest the book Tennis for Humans.

The book was is very good used condition, and I was pleased with the price, the promptness, and the product. It has very useful strategic advice for the advanced tennis player.

I have about 10 tennis books and this is the one that I grab every single training day to discuss the patterns and drills with my coach. If you really want to develop your game to a more efficient and consistent level, this book will help showing the patterns of play and the drills that cover them.

This is a good resource for developing practice drills. This would definitely be beneficial for coaches.

I do not know what I thought about this BOOK. Should have steady lessons with a Coach for it to be useful and perhaps if your playing at a College Level or have a seasoned person you hit with this book could work for you. For me the THINK to Win makes up for the information in this TENNIS TACTICS... I will keep it and should I become a 4.0 player and attain a steady COACH it may be useful. It would best be suited for a TENNIS PRO !!

Book is pretty much all patterns of play and drills linked to improve those patterns. Good variation of drills. Simple illustrations are easy to understand.
