E.B White never disappoints. This is such an endearing book that communicates hard work, differences, and perseverance in such a creative way. This is a family read aloud for us, and my ten and five year old boys both really enjoy it.

This is the first chapter book that we completed for our homeschool read aloud! It was easy for me to read, and my 7 year old son was able to narrate it well. I love Sam Beaver's character and his appreciation for nature, living things, and journaling. He's a great role model for children. I'm glad that there was a happy ending and we were able to celebrate this as our first big chapter book that we completed.

Excellent natural history, teaching of human-animal behavior, and vocabulary. The story is intriguing and absorbing, good "chapter" book to keep children and parents coming back for more. Worked great for home schooling to study the set up of books and progression of a story. Many characters to interact and keep everyone's attention.

This audio version is narrated by the author and there is always something magical about listening to an author read their own work. Also, a very skilled trumpeter plays at appropriate times throughout the story. This makes a marvelous story even more spectacular. This audio version is a treasure. My son and I really enjoyed listening to it together.

If you love Stuart Little and Charlotte's web you're going to like this one too.

I read this book when I was a kid and loved it. My cousin's son like's books about animals and I was really happy to find a copy like the one I had read that has some pictures scattered through the book to guide the imagination.

I'm a third grade teacher and I read this book to my students every year and every year it is their favorite. The story is so far out there and so imaginative that the reader can't help but get hooked. I love it!There are two illustrated versions of this book but this one is definitely the nicer one. It's really nice that it's now available as an ebook because I can project the images for all to see.

The Trumpet of the Swan turned out to be another big hit for my family and I to share together. You know you have a big hit with my kids when they will do whatever you ask of them just so you will sit there and read the next chapter!!TOTS is told from a number of different perspectives. It starts off from the perspective of Sam Beaver, a young boy from Montana on vacation with his father in the Canadian Wilderness. Sam is an introspective young man. He likes to explore and think by himself, he worries about his future, and he keeps a journal where he asks himself questions to ponder every night before he goes to sleep. My 8-year-old Noah was quite taken with that idea and I am getting a journal book of his own to write down his thoughts and make little pictures to keep. Sam is also brave and patient. His patience pays off when one day the Mother Swan and her Cob allow their new cygnets to meet him. And that is how Sam meets Lois, the little swan without a voice. In a very tender moment little Lois, who has no voice, pulls Sam's shoe lace as a way to say hello. The imagination of my young sons were so inspired with what it would take to have a wild bird like Lois come that close to them. We can't even get the stray cats in our neighborhood to stand still long enough for a pat on the head!!The Cob and his wife have come to Canada for the purpose of raising a family. The first couple of chapters are dedicated to the challenges of building a nest and hatching the young cygnets. This is my favorite part of the book! The cob, is a master orator! He never says in anything in 5 words when 50 will do much better! He is arrogant, verbose, flamboyant and charming. He cracked us all up more than once! But the central character in the book is Lois the swan, a trumpeter swan without a voice! As it turns out this is a major birth defect for this young swan if he ever hopes to communicate with his fellow swans, but particularly if he ever hopes to woo and court a female trumpeter swan. Lois sets out on his own to learn how to communicate and with the help of Sam Beaver, he learns to read and write! With his trusty chalkboard and pencil he certainly can communicate with people. But swans cannot read. My children were mortified at the illustration of Lois swimming around with the sign saying "I love you" trying to woo the swan of his dreams, Serena. Love even makes swans surrender some of their dignity I guess. Thanks to bold and brave actions by the cob, Lois does get a voice through a regular musical trumpet! This series of events sets on on a path that leads him to Ontario, Boston, Philadelphia and then eventually through the American South andthen back up to Montana. For geography, tracking Lois's adventures on the map and learning about each of these places can make for interesting lessons. [...]The Trumpet of the Swan is a family story, a love story, and adventure story, and a comedy. I highly recommend it for the entire family!

Somewhere There Is Still a Sun: A Memoir of the Holocaust, by Michael Gruenbaum Todd Hasak-Lowy

Review

Written in first-person present-tense narration, this riveting memoir traces the increasingly appalling events that took place from 1939–1945 in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, as seen through the eyes of Gruenbaum. As the book opens, 10-year-old Misha protests his growing awareness of injustice: “Every day is a new, stupid rule and worse food and no soccer.” Watching the German army enter Prague, he feels more curiosity than dread until he sees a couple jump to their death holding hands. Miseries ensue: the ghetto, yellow stars, his father’s murder, increasing danger, hunger, and humiliation—all leading to the family’s arrival in the Terezin concentration camp. There, Misha joins a group of 40 boys who live, work, and play under the stern but loving care of Franta, a young man who calls them the “Nesharim,” and demands high moral character: “We will let nothing separate us from our humanity.” The ingenuity, love, and defiant courage displayed by Misha, his parents, Franta, and others counteract incessant degradation and terror, creating an inspiring testament to human resilience. (Publishers Weekly, *STARRED REVIEW May 25, 2015)"Young Misha’s narration sets this Holocaust memoir apart from others. Initially unaware of the dark implications of the events, Misha adapted to camp life, playing soccer and making new friends, until he could no longer ignore the truth. His innocence contrasts with what readers (and the adults around Misha) know is going on, which creates a foreboding tone. The use of present-tense narration contributes to the urgency of the narration, and Misha’s sense of fairness and his unfailing faith that things will improve will resonate with students." (School Library Journal)"The Holocaust’s horrors are handled delicately for middlegrade readers but never detract from the truth. Photographs and letters add to the memoir’s efficacy and poignancy." (Booklist)"Somewhere There is a Sun reads like the private journal of a Czech boy and later teenager, candidly recording his innermost thoughts and feelings on the daily routines of his life from 1939 to 1945. With this book, Michael Gruenbaum has offered the current generation of young readers a very special book that will trigger both emotion and reflection; it is an extremely valuable tool for all of us who are trying to teach teenagers about the Holocaust . " (Margot Stern Strom, Facing History and Ourselves)“This account will help young readers imagine themselves in the midst of the unimaginable—and will show them how kids very much like them managed to survive.” (M.T. Anderson New York Times Book Review)

#148,481 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I work in the office of Massachusetts Senator Cynthia Stone Creem. Michael Gruenbaum lives in her district and was introduced to the Senate in January, 2016 when the Senate adjourned in memory of the January 27 liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. After Senator Creem and some staff members read "Somewhere There Is Still a Sun", I agreed to submit the review below, which reflects many of our thoughts and impressions of his book.Michael Gruenbaum’s story is moving, and effective. It is also unusual and riveting, because it describes the impact of the Holocaust on Michael as a young child and then an adolescent, seen through his eyes at each stage of the onslaught. We learn what a 9-year old child thought when German troops first marched in formation through Prague in 1939, and when he and his family were harassed, then dispossessed, then transported to Terezin. Michael also describes the arrest and disappearance of his father. We want to warn him that each experience he describes was more sinister than he thought at the time, but he was only a child, and he eventually had to come to the realization of what was happening on his own. That emerges masterfully. Simultaneously we learn of the resourcefulness of his mother, which enabled her, Michael, and Michael’s sister, and him to emerge after the war. All of this experience is told without bitterness, but from the vantage of one who in adulthood appreciates what his family and Jews endured. Gruenbaum’s book was written with Tod Hasak-Lowy, who includes a brief but fascinating description of the process which he and Gruenbaum went through in order to maximize the accuracy of thoughts and perceptions from the 1930’s and ‘40’s.This is, indeed, a book we all will remember.

Once I started reading the book, I really couldn’t put it down. Except for the beginning, I essentially read it all in one sitting.People might wonder why we need yet another book in a field that has already been exhaustively researched and recorded from most every angle, but I think this story is truly unique and adds a fresh perspective. You see and experience everything through the eyes of a pre-teen. The use of the present tense really makes everything come to life. There is no hindsight, so it leads you step by step from a fairly pleasant, regular life in Prague down into a situation that goes from bad to terrible to worse. In this way, you start to vaguely grasp how this horror of horrors really can happen. And it did.The matter-of-fact storytelling, with its solid, realistic detailing, engages all five senses in a way that really fleshes out the physical and mental anguish of being thrown helpless into this condition. Without giving away anything, I can say there are certainly a few searing scenes from this book I will never forget. There are also cliffhangers along the way that ratchet up the suspense notch by notch as the story builds toward what appears to be an inevitable and final doom. And it's all true. This book is already a classic in my eyes -- a story well told, demonstrating how the values of teamwork, friendship, resourcefulness, and family love can prevail. I have never lived through anything at all like this, and I thank the author for sharing his experience in a way that has helped me gain a sliver of a grasp at understanding, in a more tangible and emotional way, what really did happen -- and can happen again if we’re not careful. I will be processing what I have just read for years to come.

I was so moved by this book that I think it should be required reading in middle and high schools. This is a story about real sacrifice, suffering and the horrors of the Holocaust. Yet, even while living in a concentration camp, there was still love, friendship and integrity. It is tremendously poignant because Mr. Gruenbaum was just 10 years old when his life changed. He had a warm and loving family home with his parents and sister. Then his father is taken, and they are moved until they end up in a concentration camp. Reading from his perspective and with the help of Mr. Hasak-Lowy, the story flows beautifully in its simplicity and eloquence. I was moved to tears on a NYC train platform reading the passage about his father’s funeral! The pain was palpable but not maudlin.Yet, even with all of the horrors around him, this young boy managed to keep grounded. He and his friends helped one another and others as soon as they got the chance.I’ve already passed this book on to my daughters, and will continue to share it because it is completely worth reading.

I am certain that the actual survivor - Michael “Misha” Gruenbaum - suffered incredibly from his Holocaust experiences, including the loss of his family and friends, and his experiences in Terezin (Theresienstadt). The actual author of this book - a professional writer named Todd Hasak-Lowy - took an interesting approach in presenting the material as a young boy's present tense first person account, and apparently designed the book for young children. As a result, while we do see glimpses of Holocaust deaths, we are really just in the largely naive and innocent mind's eye of a young boy mainly enjoying the fun of soccer games in the Nazi's propaganda camp which they used as a showplace for Red Cross visitors. This book risks fulfilling the Nazi's showplace propaganda goals of Terizin, especially if the children who read this book mainly remember the soccer games and don't read other Holocaust books to learn the full extent of the Holocaust horrors.

This story is a hilarious comedic romp and adventure. It is especially amazing because the "Whiskey Robber" was a real person and it is a true story! There are some sad aspects in the sense that the reader sees the intimate struggles of people with hardly any money, scarce resources, and a corrupt and inept government and police. But overall the tone of the story is light, humorous, and very entertaining. The whiskey robber himself is brilliant, almost admirable, but foolish at times, too, and the police are comically misled repeatedly. The picture on the cover with the long hair and the missing tooth must be one of the robber's disguises; in his photos he does not look remotely like that. In fact, in reality he is handsome and quite the ladies' man. This story would make an excellent movie - plenty of action, close calls, police chases, and love affairs.

I have read this book in 1 day. I grew up in the same area as Attila, was born about 50 KM from his home town of Csikszereda. One thing Julian Rubenstein did so perfectly, that in my humble opinion makes this book a must read for everyone, is he captured the essence of what it means to be Szekely. I am not sure if he meant to do that, but by describing Attila and the way he makes his way in the world is the same faith 650,000 other Szekelys see the world with as well. Its not something that can be described. Its something that has to be lived - yet Julian was able to describe it. I'm not a writer, as he is, so I won't attempt to, just go read the book. I am not saying what Attila did was right - but at least he always knew the difference between robbing a bank or hurting a person and he never crossed the line. Well... he was also really stupid for what he did because he lost 10+ years of his life in prison, but desperation will do a lot to a man - especially a Szekely who is born with enough pride to fill five other people. But regardless of the subject matter, absolute kudos to Julian for his writing. I hope he writes another book, I would love to read it, he is a terrific storyteller. This is shown in his dedication to the research he did about the subject matter. Finally, someone has not only managed to write a book about Transylvania and specifically about the Szekelyfold that doesn't mention the vampire folklore, but actually he took the time to understand the region and portray us in a positive light instead of one we usually are portrayed in. Backwoods, homeless, useless peasants who don't know how to tie their shoes right. Finally, someone wrote a book in which the Szekelys are portrayed as human beings. That alone makes this, IMHO, a masterpiece. But I could be just a tad biased.

I read this book in 2010 while living as an expat in Budapest. Another American put it in my hands and told me: You gotta read this book! Seriously funny, good, and TRUE stuff. Very well written by an American journalist. Gives you a good idea of the last days of communism and first days of democracy in the Eastern bloc, at least in Romania and Hungary. Communism, incidentally, was not practiced the same in all the Eastern bloc countries. Romania was far more oppressive than Hungary, which is why this poor guy--of Hungarian descent and stuck in Romania--hides under the carriage of a train to escape to Hungary. Once in Budapest he becomes a hockey player and then a bank robber. You're not supposed to sympathize with a thief, but in this case you can't help it. He eventually does get caught. I read that he's making pottery in prison now and will be released in 2016. Hollywood should make a movie about this book. Great story! Read it! (Oh, btw, I loved the book so much, I had to buy my own copy.)UPDATE: I just found out that the robber was released in January 2012.

I would have never read this book had my book club not selected it but I loved, loved this true story...so well researched and written. very entertaining...a very male dominated story but all the ladies who read the book were quite endeared by the Whiskey Robber, his life story and exploits. Such an interesting character and story. I was particularly intrigued because it mainly takes place in Budapest and I was raised ethnically Hungarian. A bit of history woven in very well, Communism, post-Communism, the introduction of Capitalism. It's interesting how you begin to cheer Attila Ambrus on. Julian Rubenstein is a masterful writer. Kozenem szepen (thank you very much).

Julian Rubensten the author says in an interview he couldn't believe no other writers were jumping on this true story of a Hungarian hockey player "supplementing" his income by robbing banks in the early 1990s. Most reviewers have already summarized the plot. If I can only add some things: This is more than a page-turning comedy full of colorful criminals and real-life Keystone Cops. This is a tragedy about a man who, dismissed by his father and ridiculed by his teammates as a homeless peasant, wanted to be loved, to be accepted and to be a somebody and who used his talents, cunning, and imagination to become a grotesque criminal. Atilla, the main character, is so endearing, which attests to Rubenstein's great writing skills.Lovers of comic novels such as Confederacy of Dunces, The Gingerman or any of the farcical novels of Thomas Berger and Magnus Mills should love Ballad of a Whiskey Robber.

This biography of Attila Ambrus, famous Hungarian bank robber, has enough "hold my beer" moments to satisfy any Jeff Foxworthy fan. The part-time hockey player (The Chicky Panther) happened into a life of crime in the void created by communism's fall in 1990s Hungary.I kept thinking of the old Aykroyd/Martin "Two Wild and Crazy Guys" skits on SNL - imagine if they became bank robbers! It didn't help that Ambrus's pursuers were police with little or no resources (they worked part-time at jobs like dance instructors or coroner's assistants to make ends meet).Rubinstein never lost my interest and kept a funny (but not snarky) tone throughout, which made it obvious why the Hungarian people adopted this bumbling drunk as a national folk hero.
